What did I notice? What is lacking in many societies?
What is lacking in many societies?
I have been studying the current trends and the values and principles that are governing our current world. Many people are now abandoning their common sense and essential principles, all in the name of 'rights'. Society used to be safe and great in the past and the chain of command was vivid and distinct, from the elders to the young. People were not lazy to solve problems in their society and this is why developments like commercial farming and the fourth industrial revolution were achieved. To the young people, I encourage you to take some of your free time to just talk to your parents. The modern society is generally not a direct product of its predecessor. If you have discussions with your parents on how they grew up, you will pick one or two advantages of the old society. In Asia, respect for elders was very important and your parents used to bow or touch their elders' feet. In Africa, each elder has a rank in society and your parents used to greet their elders according to their ranks, as a form of respect. Young women would kneel and boys would sit down or look down whilst clapping their hands as a form of respecting their elders. In America and Europe, your fathers used to take off their hats and caps as they greeted their elders and your mothers would bob a curtsy to their elders. I have just mention a few forms of respect through greeting elders in some of our continents. This is just a tiny fraction of how your parents and grandparents used to respect their elders.
So what went wrong with the modern society? Do you know that many young Europeans in the 20th century were super focused and they managed to attain their qualifications and now we talk of a rich and strong European economy, since the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. How come we have more lazy young people in this modern society? Are your parents spoiling y'all very much, such that you lost your discipline, you cannot think critically, you cannot work hard and smart to change your status quo for the betterment of your future? In Africa, young boys would hunt in the bush (with a Chief's permission), herd cattle and took care of the other livestock whilst young girls cooked delicious meals for the entire family, gathered fruits and they did some house chores. These are essential life skills for young people. Where are we, as young people, getting it wrong? Think about it.
We face a lot of problems in this world and it is bound to happen until the end of the world. However, as long as you are a living human being, you can provide your own solutions to your current problems, without putting your burden onto someone else's shoulders. That person is also facing hard times in this world so do not think that they will totally prioritize your welfare over theirs. Your discipline will transform the status quo. Let us not make the mistake of shifting the blame to our leaders, for our own ill doings and lack of moral. To err is human so we need to correct our errors, for the betterment of our personal lives and our societies in general.
I conclude by proposing an answer to my question. I think many people in our current global society are lacking INTEGRITY, DISCIPLINE, RESPECT and above all, LOVE. It is time we change our minds and our actions, changing them for the betterment of our society. This can only be achieved if we look back at how people used to live together in harmony, in previous societies. We need to diagnose the problems that made many of us lose these four elements of a healthy society, at the same damn time: INTEGRITY, DISCIPLINE, RESPECT and above all, LOVE, and to see how best we can individually and collectively correct the errors in our societies.
